October 2005

Hi All,

A lot has been happening with the youth group and over the past several weeks a lot has been happening at Hus Church. The sound system has been updated and video equipment has been added. The old audio system had a limit of about 30-35 watts of power through the main speaker; by simply upgrading the speaker wire it can now be used to its full potential. The overhead projector and screen have been replaced with a digital projector and a screen large enough for everyone to see. If you could not hear or see before, you should be able to now. The very same week that the sanctuary updates were completed, the basement hallway and classrooms in the Christian Education building were painted with the base coat. Soon these walls will be painted with murals. The murals will coincide with the rotational Sunday school theme “Exploring God’s World” that will begin in January for the kids in pre-school through 5th grade. If you would like to paint one of the murals please let Michele Raim or Joyce McGivern know or call the church office. We are still having Sunday school this fall and we would love to see you there. Brig your parents as there will also be adults Sunday school classes. Keep watch for the upcoming changes like a mini cinema, a computer room and others.

As you have already found out, Sunday school for middle/senior high kids will never be the same. First we left the classroom and we are now meeting in the youth room. Why the change, part of it was because we are getting ready for rotational Sunday school, but I like to say that the real reason is because it is more comfortable to sit on sofas, recliners, etc. We are also going to a curriculum that is relevant to the youth. How are we doing that? For starters we are beginning a 15-week Bible study called “Pure Excitement” (www.pureexcitement.com) which was created by nationally acclaimed youth speaker and author Joe White. If you are a parent and want to know more about this Bible study, let Marcia, Diane, or I know and we will be happy to talk to you and show you the material.

Anticipation

Blaze
CIA (Christians In Action)
Delivery
Devotion
Jesus Freaks
Radical Youth
Revolution
Unashamed
YUCC (Youth Under Christ’s Care)
As well as a write in or two

What is all that about? The kids chose these names as possible names for the youth group and on September 7th they voted. From the top of this newsletter I bet you can figure out what they voted for … to change from Hus Youth Group to Jesus Freaks – BOOM which is short for Jesus Freaks – Believe On Our Master. That was the easy part. Now they are designing a logo so we can get t-shirts made.

When a month has a fifth Sunday, the youth group will be responsible for doing the Sunday worship service. Pastor Will, the worship team, Diane and I will help them if they want us to. We are already calling this service B.O.O.M. (Believing on Our Master). I am really looking forward to seeing what this service will be like. In addition to working on these services, we also are working on the monthly youth worship service. At this time we are looking at doing this service on either a Friday or Saturday night. Our goal is to have a high energy worship service designed for and put on by the youth for anyone who wants to come, regardless of where they are on their walk with Christ.

There are several concerts coming up. Of those we are planning to go to Onefest 2005 (www.onefest.org) in Cedar Falls. Onefest 2005 is a 24-hour time of praise, worship, and workshops. The festival begins on December 28th at 1 PM and concludes on December 29th at 1 PM. This is the first year for this festival and the churches in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area have gone all out. There will be performances by local bands as well as nationally known bands. As if this were not enough, the have signed the Newsboys to headline the festival. We need to get the tickets ordered and the transportation setup so let us know as soon as possible if you want to go. More information is available on the concert bulletin board outside of Terry’s office.

I almost forgot, we have two fundraisers going on right now. The first is the can and bottle redemption. This has gone well so far and we are looking forward to this one being a year round fundraiser so get your friends and family to bring in their cans and bottles. There are two boxes, one for plastic bottles and the other for cans. Do not worry if you don’t have them separated, just leave them in the coatroom and we will do that for you. We are selling God’s Creation appointment calendars for only $6 for the second. The calendars went extremely fast and we have already placed another order. We had no idea that we would sell so many so quickly. Let one of the youth group members know if you have not already ordered one, and they will get one for you.

As we continue the theme on mission, we are looking into doing a 30 Hour Famine (www.30hourfamine.org). What is a 30 Hour Famine? It is a time for the youth to get a brief glimpse of what it is like to go hungry. According to World Vision 29,000 children under the age of 5 die every day due to hunger and other preventable causes. That is about a quarter of the population of Cedar Rapids. The way that it works is like this; the kids quit eating after lunch on Friday and do not eat again until 6 PM on Saturday. On Friday night we would most likely have a lock in with games, music, and fellowship. On Saturday we would do community service and or group fundraisers concluding with a meal that evening. It will take a lot of work and we would definitely want to partner with several churches. It is up to you the youth to decide if this is something that they want to do. Until next month, take care and God bless.

Because of Him,

Terry and Diane

A conversation with God
Hi God. It occurred to me that all to often when we pray, we simply recite a prayer that we have learned. The words to that prayer have become to common to us that we forget what they mean. Today I just wanted to talk to you. So, how is it going? I am amazed at how people have responded to the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. Thank you for their love and for their generosity in taking care of all of the people that have lost part or all of everything they had. I feel so lucky to live in a country where I can worship you without fear of being arrested or killed. As we continue to work on the plan for the Youth and Family Life ministry, show us what you want us to do and we will get it done. In Jesus name, Amen.

“2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know hoe to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:2-6 NIV
It is late and I have an early day tomorrow. I will get the rest of the newsletters on soon as well as other articles. God Bless.

Because of Him,

September 2005

Hi All,

Summer is nearly over and school has already started. I am sure that at some point your teachers will be talking to you about safety. You will no doubt be having tornado and fire drills and for those of you that ride the bus there is the always-fun bus safety drill. One thing you probably will not learn is school bus stop safety. In the first 3 days of school for College Community I have seen some scary things and also some dumb things. There is a boy at the stop closest to our house that likes to throw things in the road. On this particular day he was throwing sandbags into the street, you know the ones that the construction workers were using to hold the “Road Closed” signs in place? Last year he was putting loose chunks of concrete in the street. I am not sure if he thinks it would be funny to see a car run over these things or not. Other kids are pushing each other and if they are not careful, someone is going to end up in front of a moving vehicle. During the same three-day period I saw a young boy, waiting for the bus, hold out his thumb like he was hitchhiking. I was amused for all of 1 second, and then the horror set in. What if someone took him up on it and stopped and offered him a ride? I am sure that he thought what he was doing was innocent enough, but I doubt he thought of the consequences. The more I think about it the more it scares me.

All of us, kids and adults, have become hardened to the horrors that are in this world. Hardly a day goes by where we do not hear that another child has been abducted. Sometimes they are returned home safely, sometime they are found dead, and sometimes they are never found. I can remember many nights driving home from work between 10 and 11 and I would see kids 8 years and older out walking or riding their bikes. I don’t know about your parents, but mine had me in bed at 8:30 at the latest. Many of you and your friends have access to surf the Internet and there are some of you that might even be going to chat rooms to talk to other people. Whatever you do, do not tell anyone anything personal about yourself. There are people out there pretending to be someone they are not. These people are in no way trying to obey God.

The “enemy” is all around us. We do not want to be like the people of Jerusalem in Jeremiah 6. God is very upset with the people, so mad that he is sending an army to destroy them. All the people have to do is to repent and do what God asks them to do, and then they will be spared. Instead they become afraid:
“25Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.” Jeremiah 6:25 NIV
They forgot that all they have to do is put their trust in the Lord and to be pure in heart and mind. Before you do something, think to yourself, “What Would Jesus Do?” If Jesus would not do, don’t do it!

I certainly do not want anyone to go into a panic over this, just be careful. God gave your parents a wonderful gift, you. I know your parents would agree that we want you to be healthy and safe. Take care of that gift.

Because of Him,

Terry and Diane

Keep us safe Lord
Heavenly Father, we ask that you keep us safe in all that we do. Father, we realize that there are many people in this world that do not know you and that some that do that for what ever reason want to cause harm to others. Lord; keep us safe from these people. Help us to show them what it is like to live a Christ-like life. Let us be your example in this world. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“5If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, 6if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever.” Jeremiah 7:5-7 NIV

August 2005

Hello All,

"1Hallelujah! Thank GOD! Pray to him by name! Tell everyone you meet what he has done!
2Sing him songs, belt out hymns, translate his wonders into music!
3Honor his holy name with Hallelujahs, you who seek GOD. Live a happy life!
4Keep your eyes open for GOD, watch for his works; be alert for signs of his presence.
5Remember the world of wonders he has made, his miracles, and the verdicts he's rendered--
6O seed of Abraham, his servant, O child of Jacob, his chosen.
7He's GOD, our God, in charge of the whole earth." (Psalm 105:1-7, The Message)

It was not long ago that the youth group painted their room and we took out all of the table and hard metal folding chairs. For several months we sat on a rather hard floor, thankful that we had a room to call our own. Then in May we received a donation from the proceeds of the rummage sale. Diane and I started to look for furniture. We knew we needed at least a couple of sofas and chairs. Praise God. In the past month we have found some wonderful deals. It all started with trips to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Stuff. The first piece we found was a beautiful chair at Goodwill for $60. After we got it to the church I kiddingly told Diane we probably could have sold the chair at stuff for a few hundred dollars. A week later we were cruising around Cedar Rapids and Marion still looking. We ended up at Stuff and found a really nice sofa with recliners at each end. Then we looked at the price tag, $300. Being the thrifty shoppers that we are, we decided that it was too much to spend. God had other ideas. We had just agreed that it was too much to spend when a lady came over the loudspeaker and said, “Welcome Stuff shoppers to our semi-annual 50% off sale.” We bought the couch. The very next week (seeing a trend here?) we were on our way to Lindale Mall, cars were all around us and Diane looked up and saw “Up to 70% off all clearance furniture” on the K’s Merchandise sign. Diane asked if we should look and I said why not. She looked in the mirror to see if she could get over the two lanes that it would take to make the turn. Remember all those cars, they were gone. We made the turn. As Diane parked the car she looked at me and said, “You know we are going to find something in here, we drove the car.” If we found something it would be the third week in a row, it would also be the third week in a row that we were driving the car when we were out looking. We made our way back to the clearance section and there it was, a beautiful new sofa, original price $550. It had been marked down to $299, then $270, and finally was at $200. We asked Karissa to sit on the sofa while we found a sales person; we were buying that sofa. When the salesman looked at the price tag he was amazed, they had knocked the price down to cost. He told us that they were selling as much as possible to make room for new sectionals that were coming in. We now had enough furniture, or so we thought.

The Wednesday after we bought the final sofa we had movie night. We had to get extra chairs for everyone to sit on. Were we disappointed about this, absolutely not! This was awesome; we did not have enough places to sit. We should soon be receiving the wonderful gift of a futon to add more seating, but we could still use more. If you have a chair, sofa, love seat, or futon that you would like to donate, please let us know, we pick-up! We are also in need of a couple of coffee tables, end tables, and lamps.

Movie night was such a success that it is now a permanent night once a month. The third Wednesday of every month has been designated as movie night. The next one is on August 17th from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. and we plan on showing “Because of Winn-Dixie.” This would be great night to invite friends. Let’s see how many chairs we need to bring in to the room this time. In upcoming meetings we will be discussing a possible name change for the youth group, fund raising ideas, mission trip destinations, possible youth conferences to attend, a fun trip next summer (like Lost Island, Adventureland, etc.), and many other things.

As we close for this month we want to extend a warm heartfelt thank you to the rummage sale as the donation that was received has paid for all of the furniture that we have bought so far.

Because of Him,

Terry and Diane

Praise be to God!
Praise be to God our Father in Heaven for the wonders that we see and those that we do not see. Rejoice in all that He has done, is doing, and will do. Without our Lord we would be lost in this world. That you Lord for our families, our friends, our schools, our jobs, the men and women that serve our country so that we can have freedom of religion, and most of all thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“2GOD is my strength, GOD is my song, and, yes! GOD is my salvation. This is the kind of God I have and I'm telling the world! This is the God of my father--I'm spreading the news far and wide!” (Exodus 15:2, The Message)

July 2005

Hello All,

1 1Hallelujah! Praise God in his holy house of worship,
praise him under the open skies;
2Praise him for his acts of power,
praise him for his magnificent greatness;
3Praise with a blast on the trumpet,
praise by strumming soft strings;
4Praise him with castanets and dance,
praise him with banjo and flute;
5Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum,
praise him with fiddles and mandolin.
6Let every living, breathing creature praise GOD!
Hallelujah!
(Psalm 150 The Message)

Praise God! It is such a joy to delight in the Lord. Praise God everywhere and for everything.

As many of you know, I am embarking on a new and wonderful journey. When the Israelites left Egypt for the Promised Land there was excitement for what was to come, but there were also many trials that were ahead. I am looking forward as the Lord leads me on a new journey as the Youth and Family Life Minister. There are many plans to make, events to hold, youth worship service to get ready for, and many other things. This could also be a very scary time. What if something goes wrong or does not go as planned? What will people think? I know there will be things that do not go the way they are planned, but I am not worried about that. Many of the greatest people in history failed at least once, if not more.

Adam failed God when he chose to eat the apple. Abraham Lincoln failed the bar exam to be a lawyer 7 times. I failed my test for my driving permit when I was 14. Adam and Eve went on to start life, as we know it. Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States. Me, well I became a loving father, husband, friend, and most importantly a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Diane and I have had a wonderful time these past few years as the youth group leaders and we look forward to many more. So, with so much to do we will let you go this for this month. Take care and may God bless you and your families every day!

Because of Him,

Terry and Diane

14This "insider world" is not our home. We have our eyes peeled for the City about to come. 15Let's take our place outside with Jesus, no longer pouring out the sacrificial blood of animals but pouring out sacrificial praises from our lips to God in Jesus' name. 16Make sure you don't take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship--a different kind of "sacrifice"--that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets. (Hebrews 13:14-16 The Message)
